Project Maven describe the U.S. militarys adoption of Machine Learning and Artificial intelligence starting in the late 2000’s and early 2010’s. Before tools provided by Palantir existed the sharing of intelligence was not centralized, creating massive difficulties in units sharing intelligence when dealing with threats in Iraq and Afghanistan. Colonel Drew Cukor led the team that pushed these tools into the Pentagon, and this book describes the difficulties of learning how to train and use these tools and the bureaucratic nightmares that come from trying to innovate inside the Pentagon. Unfortunately this book does not describe the technologies used, and is for the layman, but a user familiar with machine learning could infer some of the models they were using and how they were training them.
