This book describes the evolutionary process of the brain, from the earliest cells, through small simple organisms in the early ocean, and down through the evolutionary tree that leads to humans. It describes how the capabilities of the brain expanded as the brain itself became more complex, and how different modern animals are believed to think. It explains how evolutionary competition forced innovations in the “hardware” of the brain, which in turn led to better performing “software” and in a feedback loop pushed the evolution of the brain. The final section describes humans, and how our various cousins on the evolutionary tree may have been slight variations on our modern hardware, but seeming ly still capable of all the thoughts and capabilities we have, with the most important innovation of language being the latest evolutionary innovation.
